The house tells it in the first person. Someone done pretending to like cake, done counting the days. Everyone keeps telling them to make a wish. The happiest days are probably behind them. In the distance a boulder starts rolling on the hill, and they remain undecided.
Toskovat was founded in 2022 by David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi, who works out of Bucharest and came to perfume from outside the industry. The name comes from toska, which the house's manifesto describes as a spiritual anguish that often has no cause. This is a birthday with that in it.
What Last Birthday Cake smells like on skin
It starts the second the candle goes out. Blinding Light is the white instant before your eyes adjust, aldehydic with a thin metallic edge. Then bitter almond and a burnt wick, charred cotton over warm wax, sharpen the instant cocoa. Milk and malt sit under it, and the whole thing reads closer to scorched sugar than to a bakery.
Then the cake arrives. Armagnac soaks into stollen and vanilla custard and softens the centre. Benzoin and tonka keep it warm and faintly medicinal.
Last comes the smoke, once the sugar has burned off. Incense, tolu balsam, dry papyrus and a rope of raw hemp (the note the house calls Rope Necklace, hay-sweet and dusty) sit close to the skin. Under all of it sits the note the house calls Chekhov's Gun: cold blued steel, machine oil, flint and a thin curl of sulfur. Nothing introduced is ever idle, and this is the loaded object on the mantel.
