Ensar Oud - Purple Rain: Überblau

Purple Rain: Überblau opens on a bright collision of blueberry, cherry, and grapefruit before iris and white carnation pull it toward something cooler and more powdered, the whole thing threaded through with three layers of oud, kinam, and a Yunnan musk that stains the skin a deep, almost chromatic blue.

The Story

Überblau began as a reformulation of Ensar Oud's Iris Ghalia, with rose replacing the original jasmine sambac and an older iris extract brought in so the two florals could properly interweave. The Überblau edition carries roughly three times the oud load of the standard batch, anchored by a rare Yunnan oud-musk infusion that the house describes as bluer than Purple Kinam itself. Because that Yunnan material is finite and irreplaceable, production was limited to a small number of bottles.

Fragrance Character

The opening is fruited and tart, blueberry and grapefruit giving way quickly to iris and carnation, cool and faintly spiced. Rose surfaces in the heart, warmer now, but the kinam keeps everything slightly resinous and mineral. On the drydown the oud complex takes over entirely, sitting close to the skin with a waxy, almost indigo-dark depth that lingers long after the florals have receded.

Best Worn

Best in spring or early autumn, worn somewhere between afternoon and evening when the air is cool enough to let the kinam breathe without turning heavy.

Why the Purple Rain: Überblau Decant

With three distinct oud materials including a finite Yunnan musk infusion and a production run by definition limited, a decant is the most realistic way to spend time with this before it disappears entirely.
