Why the way in is not oud

Russian Adam spent several years distilling close to a hundred agarwood oils. The house makes its own oud and sandalwood oils. Yet none of the three Areej Le Doré perfumes at Gouttes Rares lists agarwood among its notes, as our five-house artisan comparison points out.

What you get instead is a chypre, a rose animalic and a patchouli study. That is the surprise, and it makes the house easier to start than all that agarwood suggests. You do not need to love oud, only green, or rose, or earth.

Al Majmua: the green chypre

Al Majmua means "the gathering", and it smells like wet slate under silver-green moss. Bergamot and blackcurrant open it, tart with a feral edge. Then smoky vetiver and honeyed kewda blossom, damp and forested. Oakmoss, iris and cedar finish it dry and mossy, the chypre base done properly.

The store's bands put it at 6 to 8 hours with Moderate sillage. Wear it after dark on autumn and winter nights and for dressed-up occasions. Start here: the lowest-priced way into the house, and the only one of the three with no animal materials in its notes.

War and Peace 2: rose over castoreum

War and Peace 2 is a ballroom under amber chandeliers, snow falling through an open ceiling. It is Russian Adam's tribute to old-school perfumery, set up as a fight: musky castoreum for the "war", rose for the "peace". Amber opens it, dense and honeyed. Then two roses, the Taif one jammy and peppery, over cool orris and Indian patchouli.

The base is where the animals live. Castoreum, from the beaver: tarry leather with a sweet edge. Natural musk, from the pod on the male Siberian deer: warm and skin-like once it dries down. Civet, a synthetic here: honeyed and leathery at a trace. Oakmoss and vetiver hold it to the ground.

Nepalese Patchouli: one oil, one perfume

Nepalese Patchouli is a perfume built around one oil. It is among the rarest patchoulis from the mountains of Nepal, and the whole composition is there to put that raw material on show.

It opens cool and purple: lilac, hyacinth and blue lotus, with a hint of animal musk below. Then the patchouli takes over: wet soil and forest floor, orris butter smoothing it into powder, oakmoss pulling it darker. On skin it ends damp and rooty with an animal warmth, because the whole perfume sits in a co-tincture of black truffle, orris, Siberian deer musk and Ethiopian civet.

It is an Extrait de Parfum: 8 to 10 hours on the store's bands, with Moderate sillage. It stays intimate instead of filling the room, which suits something this dense. Autumn and winter, close company.
