Caeleste Parfums
Principalities
The Story
Caeleste is a Romanian house whose three debut fragrances were conceived together as a trilogy, named for the angelic ranks it calls the Third Order. Principalities, the highest, won the 2025 Art and Olfaction Newcomer Award. David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi, the nose behind Toskovat', worked from no brief at all, only a request for the sensation of outer space.
Smoky
Charred wood and rising embers
The dry, charred scent of burning wood, smoldering incense, and lingering ash, sometimes tarry, sometimes wispy and gray. It feels brooding and atmospheric, conjuring a dying fire and a cool current of air carrying its last breath.
Mineral
cool wet stone and salt
The cool, dry smell of wet pebbles, slate, and salt-flecked air, almost metallic and faintly oceanic. It reads clean and austere, adding a stony transparency that feels like rain on hot rock or breath drawn over a quarry.
Warm Spicy
Glowing embers of the spice drawer
The rounded heat of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, dry and slightly resinous, like a baking pantry rather than a sharp kitchen. It creates a flushed, enveloping warmth that feels intimate and cool-weather, hugging the skin from within.
Metallic
Cold steel and bright blood
A cool, bloodless shimmer like the lick of a coin or the air around hot iron. Sharp and almost mineral, it lends a clean, modern coldness, the scent of a knife blade or the inside of a tin, bracing and faintly electric.
Aromatic
Crushed herbs in cool air
The green, camphorous coolness of lavender, rosemary, sage, and thyme, like herbs bruised between the fingers. It feels clean, invigorating, and a touch austere, the crisp backbone of a classic barbershop freshness.
Sweet
Edible warmth on the skin
A rounded, sugary character that suggests caramel, honey, or spun candy without any single one dominating. It reads as comforting and indulgent, the gourmand pull that makes a fragrance feel soft, inviting, and almost good enough to taste.
Hyssop
Bitter green herb with a camphor bite
What it is
Hyssop is Hyssopus officinalis, a small woody perennial in the mint family, native to southern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean and grown for centuries as a medicinal and culinary herb. The flowering tops and leaves are steam-distilled into an essential oil; its main constituents are pinocamphone and isopinocamphone.
How it smells
Green and bracing, herbal with a camphor bite, somewhere between rosemary, lavender and mint. There is a sweet anisic thread through it and a bitter, almost medicinal undertone, then a warm, faintly spicy dryness as it fades. Cool at first contact, never soft.
In perfumery
A top-note herb used in small doses for green austerity and lift. It sharpens aromatic fougeres, chypres and colognes, and pairs with lavender, clary sage, geranium, citrus and incense. Where lavender softens a composition, hyssop does the opposite, keeping the opening cold and slightly severe.
Good to know
Pinocamphone, the compound that dominates the oil, is a convulsant at high doses, which is why hyssop is used sparingly in perfumery and generally avoided in aromatherapy. Growers work around it with Hyssopus officinalis var. decumbens, a variety whose oil carries almost none of it and smells gentler for the loss.
Black Tea
Tannic warmth steeping with hay and tobacco
What it is
Fully oxidized leaves of Camellia sinensis, long cultivated across China. Plucked leaves are withered, rolled, fully oxidized and dried, deepening their color and aroma. Perfumery draws on rare tea absolutes and CO2 extracts, though the note is most often rebuilt from aroma chemicals as an accord.
How it smells
Astringent and warm, sitting between rose and jasmine softened by powdery ionones. Dried-leaf bitterness carries hints of hay, tobacco and worn leather over a tannic dryness. It opens crisp and airy, then settles into a smoky, woody calm.
In perfumery
A versatile heart note that grounds compositions, its tannic edge balancing sweetness with powdery elegance and an airy, soothing lift. Built from ionones, theaspirane, tabanone and guaiacwood, it pairs with citrus, florals and woods, defining many modern tea fragrances.
Good to know
Genuine tea extracts exist from specialist naturals suppliers, but most tea notes are reconstructions because true extracts are scarce and costly. Theaspirane, identified in tea volatiles in the early 1970s, supplies the sharp metallic tannin, while tabanone adds a warm tobacco-and-acorn nuance.
Rose Thorn
The stem's green bite beneath the petal
What it is
There is no thorn extract. Rose thorn is an accord, an effect a perfumer builds rather than a material anyone distils, since the woody spines of a rose bush yield nothing to steam or solvent. It is assembled from green, sappy and slightly metallic materials set against a rose, so the flower arrives with its stem attached.
How it smells
Rose, but cold and unfriendly. The green comes first, crushed stem and leaf with a bitter sap edge, then a thin metallic glint that reads faintly of blood or wet iron. The petal is there underneath, drier and sharper than usual, with none of the powdery softness.
In perfumery
Perfumers reach for green and metallic materials to build it: violet leaf, galbanum, leaf alcohols and rose oxide, the molecule that gives natural rose its own green, geranium-like prickle. Used at the top and heart to keep a rose from turning pretty, it sits well with saffron, incense and leather.
Good to know
Botanically, roses have no thorns. What catches your sleeve is a prickle, an outgrowth of the outer skin of the stem that snaps off cleanly; a true thorn is a modified stem or branch, wired into the plant's vascular tissue, as on a hawthorn. The note is named after something that does not exist.
Violet
Powdery purple petals that vanish as you reach
What it is
The violet flower comes from Viola odorata, with Parma and Victoria types favored historically. Natural flower oil is extraordinarily rare and barely produced today, so the modern violet note is built largely from ionones, aroma-chemicals first synthesized in 1893 by Tiemann and Krüger from citral and acetone.
How it smells
Soft, powdery and cool, with a sweet, sugar-dusted candied facet and a faintly watery, green edge. Ionones lend a curious quality that seems to fade and return as the nose tires. It reads tender and nostalgic, recalling Parma violet sweets, face powder and crushed petals.
In perfumery
A heart note giving powdery softness and a retro, romantic character. It pairs with iris, rose, leather and almond, and tempers sweetness into restraint. It centers classic violet soliflores and the candied makeup-box theme of fragrances built around violet-sweet nostalgia.
Good to know
The flower note differs from violet leaf, a green, cucumber-and-hay absolute extracted from the leaves. Ionones quickly saturate the olfactory receptors, so the scent appears to disappear then return as the nose recovers, an effect often cited as a textbook case of olfactory fatigue.
Ylang-ylang
Sun-warmed tropical bloom, banana-cream and jasmine
What it is
The drooping yellow star-shaped flower of Cananga odorata, a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and now grown mainly in the Comoros, Madagascar and Mayotte. Hand-picked blossoms are steam-distilled for fifteen to twenty hours, the run siphoned off in stages into grades from Extra to Third.
How it smells
Creamy, heady and warm: jasmine-like florals over a soft banana-custard sweetness, threaded with rubber, clove and narcissus. The Extra fraction is bright, fruity and spicy on top; later grades turn deeper, fattier and more medicinal, drying down to a rounded, slightly waxy floral.
In perfumery
A heart-note workhorse adding tropical richness and lift to floral and oriental compositions, bridging jasmine, rose and tuberose while softening citrus tops. It forms part of the floral bouquet of the great aldehydic classics, drives many a legendary floral, and underpins countless solar tiare blends.
Good to know
The name traces to the Tagalog ilang-ilang, commonly glossed as flower of flowers, reaching European perfumery via Spanish. In Indonesia the blossoms are traditionally scattered over the beds of newlyweds. A single tree fruits for decades, with the most fragrant flowers picked at dawn while still cool.
Mineral Notes
Cool breath of wet stone after rain
What it is
Since rock yields no essence, mineral notes are synthetic accords built in the laboratory. Perfumers combine ozonic molecules like calone, the earthy compound geosmin that signals rain on stone, plus salty and metallic modifiers and woody-amber synthetics to suggest flint, wet pavement and sea air.
How it smells
Cool, dry and atmospheric, like damp slate, struck flint or wet concrete after a storm. It reads crisp and slightly salty, with a chalky, faintly metallic edge and airy transparency. Drier than petrichor, it stays inorganic, lacking the green, rooty warmth of turned soil.
In perfumery
A top and heart effect adding freshness, space and a clean geological backbone, common in aquatic and modern niche styles. It pairs with salt, vetiver, incense, citrus and amber. Wet-stone compositions build their heart around mineral notes beside sea salt, ginger and ambergris, framing many flinty, smoky-stone scents.
Good to know
Geosmin, the molecule behind the smell of rain on dry earth, is detectable by the human nose at a few parts per trillion, a sensitivity thought to be evolutionary, once guiding people toward water and rainfall in arid landscapes long before they could see it.
Petrichor
First rain hitting hot dust and stone
What it is
Petrichor is not a material but a smell with a name: the scent of rain falling on dry ground. Australian scientists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas coined the word in Nature in 1964, tracing it to plant oils that collect on clay and stone through a dry spell. Perfumers rebuild it from synthetics.
How it smells
Damp and earthy, with the green sweetness of soil turned over and a cool wet-stone edge behind it. There is a mushroomy, almost beetroot depth from geosmin, a faint metallic tang like warm tarmac catching the first drops, and a clean ozonic lift over the top.
In perfumery
A top and heart effect that gives a composition weather and place. It softens mineral and aquatic accords, gives vetiver and patchouli somewhere to sit, and turns a dry woody structure damp. Used heavily it can read as cellar or mushroom, so most perfumers keep it to a trace.
Good to know
The word joins the Greek petra, stone, to ichor, the fluid said to run in the veins of the gods. High-speed imaging at MIT in 2015 showed why the smell travels: a drop landing on porous ground traps a bubble of air that fizzes upward, flinging scent-carrying aerosols into the breeze.
Oud Assafi
Agarwood under a name the house keeps
What it is
Oud Assafi is a house name rather than a botanical one, used by Caeleste Parfums in Principalities and recorded elsewhere as a trademark. The perfumer's own statement for the house describes the woods he worked with as sandal and agar, which places it as an agarwood material. Species, origin and grade are unpublished.
How it smells
No profile has been published for this particular material, so take agarwood as the guide. It is warm, dense and resinous, sweet and bitter in the same breath, running through smoky, leathery, balsamic and faintly animalic facets. It reads slow rather than sharp and holds its shape for hours.
In perfumery
Agarwood anchors a composition from the base and slows everything lighter around it, which is why so little is needed. It sits easily with rose, saffron, sandalwood and incense. Caeleste groups Oud Assafi under the Earth element of Principalities, beside leather, galbanum, immortelle, ginseng root and dry leaves.
Good to know
Agarwood itself is the dark resin a wounded Aquilaria tree lays down in its own heartwood, a defence rather than a disease, and untouched trees hold none of it. What Assafi designates, and whether it points to a species, a region or a distillation, the house has never said.
Dry Leaves
Papery autumn litter, sweet dust and tobacco
What it is
Dry leaves is an effect rather than an extract; there is no oil pressed from a fallen leaf. Perfumers assemble it from tobacco and hay absolutes, tea, dry woods and a trace of smoke, with coumarin supplying the sweet dusty edge of cut grass left in the sun. Caeleste lists it among the Earth notes of Principalities.
How it smells
Dry, papery and faintly bitter, with the tannic rustle of leaf litter kicked along a pavement. Under that sits a sweet hay warmth and a whisper of tobacco, then a cool damp undertow where the pile has been sitting on wet ground. Sweeter and softer than ash, greener than tobacco alone.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base effect that dates a fragrance to autumn faster than any other device. It works with immortelle, tobacco, chestnut, vetiver and patchouli, and gives smoky compositions something organic to smoulder against. A little sweetness keeps it from turning to compost; too much and it reads as pipe tobacco.
Good to know
Coumarin, the hay-like molecule behind the sweet half of most dry-leaf accords, was synthesised by William Henry Perkin in 1868 and put to work by Paul Parquet in Houbigant's Fougère Royale in 1882, one of the first laboratory materials to carry a commercial perfume.
Galbanum
Bitter green sap that smells of crushed stems
What it is
Galbanum is an oleo-resin that weeps from cuts in the stems and roots of Ferula gummosa, a giant fennel of the carrot family native to Iran and Central Asia. The hardened gum is steam-distilled into an oil or solvent-extracted into a dark, viscous brown absolute.
How it smells
Sharp, bitter and intensely green, like snapped plant stems and crushed leaves with a turpentine-like, resinous bite. Beneath the harsh opening lies a musky, woody, slightly balsamic warmth, and at low doses it reads as cool, dewy, living greenery rather than aggression.
In perfumery
One of the few natural green base notes, valued as a fixative and as the defining accent of green chypres and florals. It pairs with oakmoss, iris, hyacinth and neroli, and gives the bracing green overture to many classic green florals, sometimes famously overdosed for a wall of greenery.
Good to know
Galbanum is among the oldest aromatics on record, named in the Book of Exodus as an ingredient of the sacred temple incense and burned in ancient Egypt and Persia. Iran remains the principal source of the gum thousands of years later.
Ginseng Root
Bitter earth pulled from a mountain forest
What it is
Ginseng root comes from Panax ginseng, a slow perennial of the ivy family native to the mountain forests of Korea, north-east China and far-eastern Russia; American ginseng, Panax quinquefolius, is its close relative. Roots are lifted after four to six years and dried. Perfumery uses an extract of the dried root, or rebuilds its character with woody and earthy materials.
How it smells
Quiet, bitter and rooty, closer to a herbal tonic than to a spice. There is damp cellar earth and a faint mushroom note, a dry woody bark edge, and a cool green bitterness touched with liquorice. Nothing about it is loud; it works as texture rather than statement.
In perfumery
A heart-note modifier chosen for the idea of vigour as much as for its smell, common in energising masculine and sporty structures. It pairs with vetiver, mint, cardamom, citrus and dry woods, and lends an earthy backbone that keeps green compositions from floating off.
Good to know
The genus name Panax comes from the Greek for all-healing, the same root as panacea, while the Chinese name rénshēn means man root, for the forked shape prized by diggers. Wild American ginseng has been regulated in international trade under CITES Appendix II since the 1970s.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and animal warmth
What it is
Leather is an accord, not a single ingredient: there is no leather essential oil. Perfumers rebuild its scent from birch tar and cade (smoky distilled woods), styrax and labdanum resins, isobutyl quinoline and modern safraleine-type molecules, historically echoing the tannins and oils once used to cure hides.
How it smells
Smoky, dry and animalic, ranging from supple new suede to tarry old saddle. Birch-tar versions read sooty and phenolic, almost campfire and band-aid; softer suede accords turn powdery, floral and skin-warm. It can lean bitter-green, ashy or sweet depending on the supporting resins.
In perfumery
A base-note signature that gives depth, structure and a carnal edge, pairing with rose, violet, tobacco, oud and floral hearts. Iconic in the great Russian-leather and rugged dry-leather styles, each one a different facet of the accord.
Good to know
The genre was born in Russia, where book bindings and boots were treated with birch tar; the classic Russian-leather style recalls that scent. Real tanning oils were largely restricted on safety grounds, so today's leathers are almost entirely the work of clever synthetic reconstruction.
Immortelle
Sun-baked hay laced with maple and curry
What it is
Immortelle is Helichrysum italicum, a small silvery Mediterranean shrub nicknamed the curry plant, growing wild on rocky scrubland in Corsica, the Balkans and southern France. Its clustered yellow flower heads, which keep their colour when dried, are steam-distilled for an essential oil or solvent-extracted into an absolute.
How it smells
The note opens warm and herbal, like sun-warmed hay and dried chamomile, with a sharp curry-leaf edge. As it settles, sweeter facets surface: burnt maple syrup, caramel, tobacco, liquorice and tree sap. The drydown turns rounder and honeyed, faintly fenugreek-spiced and slightly medicinal underneath.
In perfumery
Used in the heart and base, immortelle lends a tobacco-tea-liqueur warmth and natural depth, pairing with woods, leather, lavender and amber in fougere and oriental builds. It anchors the reference maple-immortelle scents, and elsewhere is set against lavender for a sweeter, aromatic contrast.
Good to know
The name means everlasting: cut flowers hold their shape and colour for years without water, which earned the plant a place in ancient funeral wreaths. Corsican distillation yields are tiny, so true immortelle absolute ranks among the costlier naturals on a perfumer's bench.
Ash
Cold embers, mineral dust and dying smoke
What it is
Not a harvested material but a constructed accord. Ash, the grey residue of burnt wood, cannot be distilled, so perfumers evoke it synthetically. They take smoke materials such as birch tar, cade oil and guaiacol, then strip away their warm resinous facets to leave only the dry, mineral, bitter trace.
How it smells
Dry, smoky and faintly bitter, like a fireplace the morning after. There is burnt wood and cold charcoal, a chalky mineral edge, and the slightly metallic dustiness of cooled embers. It reads austere and desolate, with no sweetness or resin to round it off.
In perfumery
A base note prized for raw, atmospheric depth in smoky and mineral compositions. It is amplified by vetiver, cedar and birch tar, while jasmine, rose or incense can soften its starkness. The note appears in avant-garde and niche fragrances built around fire, ruin and bleak landscapes.
Good to know
Because true ash has no extractable oil, the note exists entirely as an olfactory illusion. Perfumers often build it by subtraction, removing the cosy parts of a smoke accord rather than adding new materials, so the smell is defined by what is taken away.
Elemi Resin
Hardened tree blood, warm amber and incense
What it is
Resin is the sticky exudate woody plants secrete when bark is cut, hardening as it meets the air. Sources include frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, labdanum and elemi. The dried tears or gum are gathered, then converted into oils and absolutes by steam distillation or solvent extraction.
How it smells
Broadly warm, balsamic and sweet, with smoky, dry-wood and incense facets. Frankincense reads peppery and citrus-pine, benzoin turns vanillic and ambery, myrrh leans bitter and medicinal. Most resins open slightly sharp, then settle into a soft, glowing, almost honeyed depth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
Primarily base notes prized as fixatives, extending and grounding a composition. Resins build amber accords, anchor orientals and add churchy gravity. They pair naturally with labdanum, vanilla, spice and woods, defining everything from warm balsamic amber compositions to smoky frankincense incense scents.
Good to know
Frankincense and myrrh, both tree resins, were prized in antiquity alongside gold and appear among the biblical gifts of the Magi. Tapping methods are ancient and barely changed, yet over-harvesting now threatens wild Boswellia stands across the Horn of Africa and Arabia.
Chili Pepper Seeds
Dry seed heat inside a split capsicum
What it is
Chili pepper seeds are the pale seeds inside the fruit of Capsicum, the American nightshade genus that gives us cayenne, bird's eye and paprika. They carry little pungency of their own; capsaicin sits in the white placental tissue they cling to. As a note it is a perfumer's accord rather than a distilled oil.
How it smells
Not the burn, which is felt rather than smelled: capsaicin barely evaporates. What comes across is dry and papery, a toasted, faintly green seed smell with a vegetal bite behind it, like the dust that rises when you break a dried pod open.
In perfumery
A heart accent that reads as heat without sweetness, usually built from pyrazines and pepper materials rather than an extract. It sharpens smoky, mineral and leathery structures, sits well beside saffron, elemi and ash, and gives a composition a sting that spice resins cannot.
Good to know
Capsaicin is not volatile, so there is nothing for the nose to catch; the plant's heat registers on pain receptors in the mouth and skin instead. Birds lack the receptor entirely and eat the fruit freely, which is how capsicums spread their seeds.
Saffron
Crimson threads breathing leather, honey and dry hay
What it is
Saffron is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, a purple autumn-flowering crocus in the iris family. Each bloom yields just three slender crimson threads, plucked by hand. The dried threads are steeped into a tincture or solvent-extracted into an absolute to capture their aromatic oil for perfumery.
How it smells
Warm and dry at first, with hay, honey and toasted bread, then a metallic, leathery edge driven by the molecule safranal. Beneath runs a bittersweet, faintly medicinal earthiness and a soft rubbery warmth. It opens spicy and golden, drying into suede, tobacco and dusty amber.
In perfumery
Saffron works in the heart, bridging spice and leather and lending a glowing, reddish warmth. It pairs classically with rose, oud, amber and tobacco. Whole leathery accords can be built around it, and it is often wed to rose for a rich, spiced-floral effect.
Good to know
Saffron is the costliest spice on earth, dearer by weight than gold. A single kilogram demands roughly 150,000 hand-picked flowers and many days of stooped labor. Most perfumery saffron is reconstructed from synthetic safranal or saffron bases, since the natural extract is too rare and expensive to use widely.
Star Dust
The cold, metallic hush of open space
What it is
There is no plant called star dust. It is a conceptual note, an accord a perfumer assembles to suggest airlessness and cold. Caeleste's own account of Principalities describes the perfumer researching astronaut and space-engineer interviews and working towards a metallic, oddly pleasant minerality and dryness. Aldehydes, ozonic and mineral materials and ambery woods typically carry it.
How it smells
Airless and faintly electric. Think struck flint and cold sheet metal, a chalky mineral dryness, then a soapy aldehydic shimmer over pale ambery warmth. There is no fruit and no flower in it, and almost no sweetness; the impression is of distance and low temperature rather than of a substance.
In perfumery
It works as an atmosphere rather than a note, giving a composition altitude and emptiness around denser materials. It sits naturally with hot metal, mineral notes, incense and ash, and it needs something warm underneath, sandalwood or amber, or the effect turns thin and clinical.
Good to know
Astronauts have repeatedly described a smell clinging to suits and equipment brought back inside after a spacewalk, reported as seared metal, welding fumes or spent gunpowder. Space itself is a vacuum and carries no odour, so the note is an account of that reported second-hand smell.
Cosmos Flower
A dark red daisy that smells of chocolate
What it is
Cosmos flower here means Cosmos atrosanguineus, the chocolate cosmos, named by the house itself. It is a tuberous Mexican perennial in the daisy family, with small velvety flowers of such deep maroon they read as black, and it scents the air around it on warm afternoons. No commercial extract exists, so the note is reconstructed.
How it smells
Warm cocoa and vanilla first, closer to a tin of drinking chocolate than to a flower, with a light red-fruit sweetness and a faint bitter edge underneath. The floral part is soft and almost powdery. In a composition it arrives as gourmand warmth wearing a petal.
In perfumery
Built from cocoa and vanillic materials with a floral overlay, it gives sweetness that stays dark rather than sugary. It softens smoke, metal and ash, pairs readily with immortelle, saffron and sandalwood, and is the usual way a perfumer makes a burnt or mineral structure wearable.
Good to know
Chocolate cosmos is listed as extinct in the wild; every plant grown today comes from cultivated stock rather than a Mexican population. For most of the last century it was propagated only by division of a sterile clone, which is why the scent is better known from garden borders than from a bottle.
Gunpowder
Smoke, sulphur and struck char on the wind
What it is
Gunpowder is not a botanical but an accord built by perfumers. Black powder itself is saltpetre, charcoal and sulphur; its scent-image is reconstructed from smoky woods, sulphurous and burnt-match materials, tarry birch and trace metallic, mineral notes layered to suggest combustion and spent fireworks.
How it smells
It opens sharp and acrid, like a freshly struck match or a spent firecracker, with sulphur, hot metal and ash. Beneath sits dry charred wood and a flinty mineral edge. The drydown settles toward warm smoke, gunflint and singed paper rather than open flame.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base effect prized in dark, smoky and incense compositions for tension and edge, pairing with leather, oud, incense, vetiver and saffron. The flinty gunpowder facet, paired with flint and smoke, drives a number of green and mineral niche compositions and runs through many mineral niche leathers.
Good to know
The smell of fireworks owes more to vaporised metallic salts and sulphur than to the powder itself. Perfumers chase the effect with sulphur-bearing molecules and smoky materials; many cult smoky scents also lean on birch tar, which is why some read faintly of campfire and old leather.
Burnt Almond Cookie
Caramel, char and bitter almond from the oven
What it is
A gourmand accord rather than a material; nothing of the kind is distilled. Perfumers assemble it from benzaldehyde and heliotropin for the almond, caramelised sugar and vanilla for the biscuit, and roasted pyrazines with a trace of smoke for the burnt edge. The phrasing here is the perfumer's own, from his account of the composition.
How it smells
Sweet and toasted, with the marzipan-and-cherry-stone side of bitter almond over warm caramelised sugar and butter. Then the char arrives: the dry, slightly acrid smell of a biscuit left a minute too long. It is edible but never sugary, and the burnt part keeps it from turning cosy.
In perfumery
A base-weighted effect used to make dark, smoky or metallic compositions approachable without softening them into dessert. It answers ash, gunpowder and hot metal particularly well, and pairs with immortelle, tonka, saffron and sandalwood. Overdosed, it tips a fragrance straight into bakery.
Good to know
