Toskovat publishes no translation of the name. Domus is Latin for house or home, and numen is a divine presence felt in a place, sensed before it is seen, so the name reads as the house of the presence. That is our reading, not the house's statement.

What the house puts under the name is plainer. Below the note list on Toskovat's own page sits a short journal piece, the house's own label for it. It begins with a memory of returning home and speaks to a Father: I will join you one day, Father. It closes on three lines: Too much truth, Here Lies. The store calls those lines its epitaph, and the perfume an elegy to a lost father figure.

A father figure, three years, 300 bottles

Every full bottle Toskovat sold came with a handmade pendant on a chain, worked in gold, silver and diamonds. The house's own note list reads like a will: Three Metal Nails, Father's Jacket, Grave Flowers.

It began as a rework. Toskovat took its earlier Take Me To Church and intensified it into this, then made 300 bottles for its third anniversary. They went on sale in late August and are now sold out at the house.

How Domus Numeni smells on skin

It opens cold. Metal and a solar brightness arrive together, like low winter sun on iron. Clove and black pepper cut through boozy elemi underneath, and the cold comes in the way a draught comes under a church door.

The heart is where the funeral mass image comes from. Frankincense and myrrh settle in, with something the house calls Father's Jacket and the store calls fabric, a rough cloth smell inside the smoke. Candle wax pools under all of it. It carries the gravity of a midnight mass, and that is the weight of it.

Then the church empties. Birch tar and Vietnamese oud come up through papyrus dust. Immortelle puts a dry, honeyed ache into the incense, and the whole thing moves in close to the skin.
