Amouage Decision: The Perfume of a Juniper Struck by Lightning

Above 2,500 metres on Jebel Shams, the junipers grow dry and twisted, their branches wrung into shapes that look sculpted. Lightning finds them often at that height, and the heat of a strike can split the trunk wide open. Decision is built on that instant: a cool flash of frankincense, bergamot, myrrh and juniper, as dry and mineral as the rock the tree stands on.

Quentin Bisch composed Decision for Amouage. Released in 2025 with its twin, Existence, it closes the house's Odyssey Collection at twelve perfumes. It began with a climb up Jebel Shams by Renaud Salmon, Amouage's Chief Creative Officer, and it asks one question: when lightning hits a juniper, does the tree survive, or does it perish?

The Mountain of the Sun

Jebel Shams, the Mountain of the Sun, is the highest peak in Oman. The way to the top is a three-hour drive, then a seven-hour hike, and Bisch made the climb too, all the way to the summit. To Salmon the high junipers live on the edge of life and death at the same time, and what he wanted to bottle was the spirit of a tree on the brink, "alive and almost petrified".

Give up, or keep growing

The Odyssey perfumes are emotional patterns, none of them autobiography, and the pattern in Decision is the strike: being hit by something you cannot control. Salmon's list is blunt: "a disease, losing someone you love, or being made redundant at work." Whether you then give up or keep growing is yours to decide, and that choice gave the perfume its name. It is meant to hold the paradox inside any big decision: focused on its goal, and still open to countless possibilities. The twins were conceived as two energies: Decision driven and vertical, the energy of resilience, and Existence contemplative and horizontal.

The first accord was the lightning

The first accord Bisch made from the story was the lightning itself: "metallic, vertical, very dry, vibrant and sparking." Salmon loved it, but it was "missing life": there was a strike in it, and no tree yet. So Bisch added balsamic notes and vanilla to give the tree its warmth and resilience after the strike.

In the finished perfume the lightning is the opening, with its citrus, mineral sparkle, and pink pepper and cardamom run alongside it. Juniper is the keynote, halfway between aromatic and woody, and it gives the perfume a little of a gin and tonic. Atlas cedarwood carries the light further with a polished sheen, and a warm vanilla settles underneath, the acceptance that comes after the strike.

Frankincense, unlit

Frankincense holds every note in Decision together, from the pepper at the top to the vanilla at the bottom. "That's the beauty of frankincense from Oman," Salmon said. "It's not smoky, you know?" It smells light and cool, an incense of daylight, where many incense perfumes lean on smoke.

In Oman frankincense is everywhere, part of the country's identity, smelled at the airport and in people's homes, and Amouage is the custodian of Wadi Dawkah, a frankincense valley recognised by UNESCO in 2000, where it harvests resin. The junipers have a place in Omani homes too: in Omani lore they are often seen as mystical, and their wood is burned ceremonially, much like frankincense. The tree and the resin behind this perfume are both things Omanis burn, and in Decision the frankincense stays unlit.

A herd of goats at sunset

At the summit, Bisch and Salmon sat down to watch the sunset. Bisch told him to close his eyes and be aware of the moment. They closed their eyes, began to smell the mountain, and a herd of goats appeared. For a moment, all they could smell was goat. The goats stayed on the mountain.

The view everyone had promised Salmon from up there, an amazing view all around, was hidden under a sea of clouds, and he was a little disappointed. The clouds became Existence, a lily of the valley in a celadon bottle, and Decision, the lightning, came in seagull grey.

A single drop of grey

Both colours came from Chinese monochrome ceramic, where the white is so pure that a single drop of colour changes the whole piece. Inside, Decision is an eau de parfum at 33 per cent perfume oil, aged five weeks. That is close to the top of Amouage's own eau de parfum band, and well above Purpose, the eau de parfum Bisch made for the same collection, which sits at 20.

Pink pepper and bergamot, juniper and light Omani frankincense, then cedar and a warm vanilla kept on the balsamic side. This is frankincense for someone who finds church-smoke incense too heavy and reaches for a gin and tonic before anything sweet. Of the two Decisions, it is the lighter one.

Purpose, like Decision, is built on a vertical line, and Purpose 50 is its Exceptional Extrait, at 50 per cent perfume oil and four weeks of ageing. It opens much as Decision does, on frankincense, bergamot and pink pepper, then goes down into papyrus, sand vetiver, rose and a sandalwood accord, with saffron, suede and vanilla underneath and its feet in the earth.

In September 2026 Amouage announced Decision 42, a new Exceptional Extrait. The same perfumer tells the story again, and the number is the concentration: 42 per cent perfume oil, aged six weeks. Bisch sharpened the lightning with neroli, cardamom and cinnamon, pushed the juniper darker and smokier with patchouli, rectified pine tar and a woody synthetic, set sandalwood in the heart and warmed the base with vanilla and labdanum. Its bottle is lacquered inside in the same seagull grey, the drop of colour from the ceramic again, and this time the juniper is allowed to smoke.
