Arthur Clayton Emrick is the perfumer behind JINX, which he runs from a refurbished restaurant in Canandaigua, New York. He grew up in a remote part of rural Michigan, and its wild flowers, grasses, woods, rivers and lakes gave him his first references for scent. He has collected fragrance for close to twenty years and is mostly self-taught, with a feel for chemistry and trial carried over from brewing, winemaking and cooking.
JINX works in oud and animal notes, vintage stock and extraits as strong as 46%. Jinx Santal 1952 stacks five sandalwoods, one a Fritzsche Brothers oil from 1952. Jinx J-Gris builds an amber accord on white, grey, black and marbled ambergris. Jinx Roxo sets a house-made ruby port accord against vintage orris and Malaysian oud; Jinx Blue Chyp is a Russian-style chypre with blue lotus and deer musk. With Filippo of Zanini he composed Natty or Not?, a fully natural perfume built at a distance.
Jinx Cuirassier came out in 2025 as a 41% extrait that pits vintage French cuir against modern Arabian leather. Violet, honey and currant lead into lily of the valley, iris, rose and patchouli, over leather, birch tar from about 1940, castoreum, Cambodian oud, Mysore sandalwood, oakmoss and costus. Synthetics make up 22% of the formula and are declared by name: isobutyl quinoline, jasmonates, macrocyclic musks and a lily of the valley accord.
