Elixir Attar
Kinam Kodo
The Story
Kinam Kodo is an extrait de parfum from Elixir Attar, founded in 2019, and the second release in the house's smoke series. It was built by isolating chromones from kinam and sinking-grade agarwood and reconstituting captured kinam smoke rather than distilling kinam wood, so it is a reconstruction rather than a distillation.

Smoky
Charred wood and rising embers
The dry, charred scent of burning wood, smoldering incense, and lingering ash, sometimes tarry, sometimes wispy and gray. It feels brooding and atmospheric, conjuring a dying fire and a cool current of air carrying its last breath.

Oud
What a tree makes when it is wounded
A dense, resinous wood that smells warm and slightly medicinal, with a leathery, animal-tinged smokiness and a sweet, almost barnyard funk underneath. It feels ancient and brooding, wrapping the skin in something thick and quietly powerful.

Woody
Dry grain of cut timber
The smell of cedar shavings, sandalwood, and dry vetiver roots, a sanded, resinous warmth with a faint pencil-box rasp. It feels grounded and composed, the quiet backbone that makes a scent read as serious and lasting.

Balsamic
Tree sap gone thick and golden
Tree resins and golden amber, thickened to syrup and touched with vanilla. It does not sparkle or move; it settles, warming the skin the way candlelight warms a room, and it stays there long after the top notes have gone quiet.

Earthy
Damp soil after the rain
The mineral smell of wet ground, and of beets pulled straight from the dirt with the soil still on them. Cool, raw and faintly bitter, it grounds a fragrance with the dark, humid breath of the forest floor.

Nutty
the moment nuts turn golden
Skins toasting in a warm pan: hazelnut, almond and walnut going brown, with a buttery praline softness and a whisper of marzipan behind them. It reads cozy and edible, warm rather than sugary.

Kinam smoke
The smoke of kinam, rebuilt note by note
What it is
Not a kinam distillation. It is built from individual aroma materials to reproduce the smell of kinam-grade agarwood as it smoulders on a listening burner in kōdō, the Japanese incense ceremony. Kinam wood in the quantity a perfume would need effectively does not exist, so the smoke itself is reconstructed rather than the oil extracted.
How it smells
Smoky and medicinal in the Chinese manner, leathery, with a nutty, almost bitter-almond edge running over deep woods. It is moist and oily rather than dry, and it opens up as it wears, staying smoky while turning steadily more resinous.
In perfumery
Gives a composition the character of burning kinam without the wood, the only way to put that smell in a bottle at any scale. It sits against resins, dark woods and leather, and it carries a fragrance's whole upper register on its own where a distilled oud would sit in the base.
Good to know
A reconstruction is not a lesser oud but a different thing, which is why it is named smoke rather than oil. Judge it against the memory of incense on a coal, not against a bottle of distilled agarwood.
Fragrance Character
It opens dense and slightly mentholic, bitter and oily, with a medicinal edge and a nutty, almond-like bitterness under the smoke. The middle turns resinous and sweeter, closer to wood on a burner than to a wood note. The drydown turns to damp forest soil and a hay-like, honeyed warmth, and it projects more strongly at a distance than up close.
Best Worn
Autumn and winter, evening rather than morning. It fits unhurried settings where a single dense material can hold the room, and suits anyone already familiar with oud oils and burned agarwood.
