Ex Nihilo Blue Talisman Extrait: A Lucky Charm, Cut Like a Diamond

Late afternoon in a room that has held the sun all day. A pear lies quartered on a white plate, the knife beside it still wet, and a jar of cut jasmine and orange blossom on the sill has gone warm and heavy in the heat. Between them on the tablecloth, a blue stone on a thin gold chain is the one cool thing in the room.

Ex Nihilo Blue Talisman Extrait wears like that room: cut pear first, then white flowers gone heavy in the sun. Jordi Fernández made the original eau de parfum for the Paris house's tenth anniversary in 2023. Two years later he re-worked it as an extrait and gave its base two notes the original's list does not carry: vanilla and sandalwood. The extrait's own ingredient list goes a step further and names real sandalwood oil.

A column of melted cannon

"The whole inspiration was Place Vendôme, the epitome of luxury in Paris," Sylvie Loday has said of Blue Talisman. She founded Ex Nihilo near that square in 2013, with Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier, and the house keeps its home at 352 Rue Saint-Honoré. The perfume was meant as a hypnotic jewel and a lucky charm for the skin.

The square is an odd place to go looking for luck. At its centre, a column commemorates the Austerlitz campaign of 1805: a stone core wrapped in bronze plaques made from 1,200 artillery pieces taken from the Russians and Austrians and melted down. It went up between 1806 and 1810. In 1893 Boucheron moved from the Palais Royal to number 26, the first jeweller on the square. Blue Talisman's luck comes from a place with melted guns at its centre.

A master of oud, working in pear

Fernández taught himself. He grew up in Catalonia among Mediterranean colognes and later lived in the Middle East, among oud and incense. In 2021 he was splitting each month between his lab in Barcelona and an office in Dubai, and he did not wear perfume in everyday life: it might confuse him at work.

He is often called the Master of Oud. Neither version of Blue Talisman has oud on its note list: for the house's lucky charm, he put a pear at the top of both.

Pear, then white flowers in the sun

For the extrait Fernández turned the pear up, so it opens on juicy fruit with the bitter brightness of bergamot around it. Then jasmine sambac comes in beside the orange blossom and the flowers go warm and round, the way the ones on the sill do by four o'clock.

Underneath, bourbon vanilla brings sweetness and sandalwood brings what Loday calls "a milky, woody embrace." Soft musks and a dry ambery wood run beneath that, with Ambrofix, a Givaudan material that begins as fermented sugar cane and is not real ambergris.

Whatever the name suggests, there is no sea in it. The blue belongs to the stone, and it has company at this house: a signature colour, Pantone 293 Blue, and a Latin name that Ex Nihilo glosses as "created out of the blue".

The raw stone and the cut one

"The Blue Talisman Eau de Parfum is a raw diamond," says Loday, "the Blue Talisman Extrait de Parfum is one that has been cut." Liberty London showed the cut stone in August 2025, in its Fragrance Lounge, among the launches for the store's 150th anniversary.

Set the two note lists side by side and the cut is plain. The ginger and the mandarin are gone, and so are two trademarked materials, Georgywood and Akigalawood. Jasmine, vanilla, sandalwood and ambery woods take their place around the pear and Ambrofix that both versions share.

The original is a light, airy composition, juicy pear set against an overdose of Ambrofix. The extrait gives that air a floor of vanilla and wood. Ex Nihilo still makes both, the raw stone and the cut one. Most talk of extrait versus eau de parfum stops at strength; with Blue Talisman the formula itself changed.

Written in the small print

The extrait's list of allergens and ingredients runs long. Past the alcohol, the fragrance and the water, it names two oils among the declared allergens: bergamot peel oil and, near the end of the list, sandalwood oil.

Any perfume can print sandalwood among its notes. This list names the oil itself, in a quantity the page does not give.

The eau de parfum's page says less. Its much shorter list names no plant oil at all, not even the bergamot and mandarin on its own note list, so it cannot say whether the original holds sandalwood oil too. Fleur Narcotique Extrait and Outcast Blue Extrait both carry a sandalwood note in the base, and their short ingredient lists name no plant oil of any kind, sandalwood or otherwise.

On the same shelf

The stone after the cut: pear first, then white flowers warmed through, and an ingredient list that names real sandalwood oil. It suits someone who loves white flowers but wants them framed by fruit and wood, and who reaches for polish before freshness.

Fernández gave his own Gold Immortals the same treatment. Pear and bergamot open it and Ambrofix and vanilla hold it, as in Blue Talisman, but ylang-ylang fills the heart where Blue Talisman has jasmine, and tonka bean pulls the base toward a golden, almond sweetness.

Quentin Bisch's floral for the house carries the orange blossom and jasmine pair at its centre too, with freesia beside them. Lychee and osmanthus open it, and oakmoss and musk hold it down. Its subtitle is "Floral overdose": where Blue Talisman sets its flowers like a stone, this one makes them the whole piece.

Outcast Blue carries the line "For punks and poets", and its extrait is Fernández's work too. It runs the opposite way: saffron and black pepper, a cool flash of lily of the valley, then a dark base of tobacco, vetiver, oakmoss and sandalwood. He boosted that base with a powerful agarwood, which is where the Master of Oud finally shows his hand.

Always in her handbag

Sylvie Loday is an engineer. She imagined the Osmologue, the machine in Ex Nihilo's flagship shops that weighs and blends a customer's own composition in a few minutes, in front of them.

Asked in a 2026 interview what is always in her handbag or hand luggage, the engineer behind that machine answered with the house's lucky charm: "Blue Talisman!"
