Where to Buy Niche Perfume Decants, and What Each Source Leaves Out
A paper strip sprayed at a perfume counter rides home in a coat pocket. On the train, with rain running sideways across the carriage window, it comes out smelling of raspberry darkened by smoke, with resin and wood underneath: Ombre Nomade. One spray on paper is enough to want it and nowhere near enough to know it, and the bottle on the counter asks for a decision the strip cannot support.
Between the strip and the bottle there are five ways to own a little of a niche perfume: the sample a house sends with a bottle order, a house's own sample set, a split among strangers, a marketplace listing and a decant shop.
The sample that ships with the bottle
Louis Vuitton's online store lets a customer choose up to two complimentary samples at checkout, but only when the order includes a fragrance. Louis Vuitton suggests picking a sample of the bottle being bought, so the bottle can go back unopened if the perfume disappoints, on terms that change from country to country. It suits a buyer whose mind is already made up. Anyone still holding a paper strip has to pay for the bottle before the sample can settle anything.
The scent on the paper strip: Ombre Nomade
Jacques Cavallier Belletrud built Ombre Nomade for Louis Vuitton around oud wood, faceted with benzoin tears and raspberry accents, while the incense stays far off, a smoky wisp from somewhere deep in the desert.
Four vials or twenty
Some houses make the small format themselves, which settles the authenticity question at once. Xerjoff's Sample Kit lets the buyer choose up to four of its perfumes in small vials, and the price of one kit comes back as credit on the next order above a minimum spend, within two months. Duties and import taxes on a Xerjoff parcel are the customer's to pay, and outside the European Union a parcel refused over the customs charge is destroyed by customs, with no refund.
Zoologist's Greatest Hits set this year is fixed: twenty small vials chosen by the house, Squid and Tyrannosaurus Rex among them. It is a good way into the whole house. Someone who wants only Squid gets the other nineteen as well. Neither set crosses into another house.
One of the twenty: Squid
Céline Barel's Squid smells of dark water: pink pepper and incense, then salt and a sweet, clouded ink warmed by opoponax, and last a pale amber of benzoin over an ambergris accord. Its ambergris and musk are synthetic, and Squid uses no animal products.
A bottle shared among strangers
On the perfume blog Now Smell This, strangers split new bottles between them in a recurring splitmeet. In its twenty-fifth round, posted in April 2026, anyone could offer to host up to six bottles, with shipping built into every share and no money taken until a split was certain to go through. The bottles have to be newly bought, and decants poured from bottles already in someone's collection have no place there.
When a split goes wrong, the blog takes no responsibility and stays out of it. Everything from the syringe to the packing belongs to a stranger.

An empty bottle on eBay
eBay UK's perfume policy bans perfume transferred into another container, and anything out of its original packaging, and eBay Australia's cosmetics policy carries the same ban on transferred perfume. On eBay UK a decant breaks the rule, while an empty bottle may be sold if it infringes no one's rights and is listed as empty.
Police in Sharjah once raided a farm and found large quantities of empty perfume bottles and stickers bearing well-known brand names, beside the machines to refill them. The bottles were refilled and labelled with those stickers for sale in shops in other emirates.
Poured by someone else
A decant shop pours from the maker's original bottle into a clean, sealed vial or atomiser, across houses and in the size the buyer picks. What it gives up is the thing a house set settles at once: someone other than the house filled the vial.
The arithmetic is simple: price divided by millilitres, for the decant and for the full bottle it was drawn from. A hundred-millilitre bottle of Naxos holds enough for twenty decants of five millilitres, each needing its own sealed and labelled vial or atomiser, so an honest decant costs more per millilitre than its bottle. On the Gouttes Rares shelf, the largest Naxos decant costs about 1.2 times the per-millilitre rate of the full bottle beside it, and the smallest about 1.7 times. A decant priced below the house's own retail rate per millilitre means the seller paid less than retail, is pouring something other than that bottle, or is losing money on every vial, which is where impossibly low decant prices begin.
One bottle, twenty vials: Naxos
Naxos sits in Xerjoff's 1861 collection, created to mark 150 years of Italian unification, and is the house's tribute to Sicily. It opens on bright lemon, bergamot and a fresh, aromatic lavender, turns to honey around jasmine sambac with cinnamon underneath, and ends warm and enveloping, tobacco leaf sinking into vanilla and tonka.
Behind the price
Every decant price rests on a bottle, and a seller who paid retail for it can say where it was bought and what the perfume passed through on its way into the vial. At Gouttes Rares every decant is filled by hand, to order and undiluted, from a genuine, retail-bought bottle that never came from the grey market, through the reusable all-glass Socorex Dosys 155 syringes on the bench.
Louis Vuitton's ingredient list for Ombre Nomade opens with alcohol. EU rules list ingredients by descending weight and name the fragrance blend with the single word parfum, so the alcohol in that bottle outweighs the perfume it carries. The US Hazardous Materials Table gives perfume an entry of its own, perfumery products with flammable solvents, UN1266. The US Postal Service bars flammable liquids from international mail outright, and DHL Express names perfume among the goods that may be classed as dangerous.
Duties and import taxes arrive as a second bill, separate from shipping. In the UK the carrier bills the buyer, and a parcel still unpaid after about three weeks goes back to the sender. The EU ended its VAT exemption for low-value imports on 1 July 2021 and now requires an import declaration for every parcel that enters. Gouttes Rares sends its decants with DHL Express, prepared as dangerous goods under UN1266 to DHL's own requirements, and ships them DDP, with duties paid before the parcel leaves, to more than 220 countries.
With reviews, the number that matters is how many were left out. Judge.me, a third-party reviews app, gives its Gold Transparent Shop medal to shops that have published at least 95 percent of the verified reviews they received, a verified review being one it can tie to a purchase. Gouttes Rares runs its reviews through Judge.me and holds that medal, which measures how reviews are handled and nothing about what is inside a vial.
At Gouttes Rares a vial that arrives broken, faulty or wrong is replaced or refunded once the claim is approved, if the buyer writes within five days of delivery with photos and the order number. Decants are hygiene goods, so once the outer box or envelope is open they cannot come back, and international sales are final outside that cover.
The fountain and the vial
A bottle of Ombre Nomade, once bought, can be carried back to a Louis Vuitton store with a perfume fountain and filled again. A decant is that pour made small, from a full bottle into a vial that rides home in the coat pocket where the paper strip used to be.
Frequently asked questions
Are perfume decants legit?
A decant is perfume moved directly from the maker's original bottle into a smaller, clean, sealed vial or atomiser, so it is exactly as genuine as the bottle it was drawn from. The useful questions are where the seller bought that bottle and how the transfer was done.
Can perfume decants be sold on eBay?
eBay UK's perfume policy and eBay Australia's cosmetics policy both prohibit perfume that has been transferred into another container, which rules out decants as the rules are written. eBay UK does allow empty perfume bottles to be sold, as long as no third-party rights are infringed and the listing makes clear the item is an empty container.
Why does a decant cost more per millilitre than the full bottle?
One bottle is divided into many small decants, and each needs its own vial or atomiser, sealed and labelled, so an honest decant costs more per millilitre than its bottle. At Gouttes Rares the Naxos decants sit between about 1.2 and 1.7 times the per-millilitre rate of the full bottle sold here; against Xerjoff's own retail price the multiple is higher.
Can perfume be sent through the post?
Perfume is a flammable liquid, listed as UN1266 in the US Hazardous Materials Table. The US Postal Service bans flammable liquids from international mail, and DHL Express carries dangerous goods only for shippers it has approved in advance.
